Hydrogen-Aeolic Energy with Optimised eLectrolysers Upstream of Substation

Environmental Performance Analysis

The Haeolus project is proud to publish our latest report by Tecnalia, an LCA analysis of hydrogen plants integrated in wind parks.

The report analyses three wind parks with different characteristics: Raggovidda and Smøla in Norway, and Moncayuelo in Spain.

The conclusions were that when hydrogen is produced as fuel, its production from green energy would result in a 94% reduction of greenhouse-gas emissions compared to traditional production by steam reforming.

If hydrogen is instead re-electrified to provide power to the grid, the picture is more complex: in the case of Norway, that already has an almost completely CO2-free electricity production, re-electrification would actually increase emissions by a factor of 4; but in Spain, this would instead reduce emissions by 65-70%.
