Haeolus partner Varanger Kraft has recently released to the press their long-term plans for exploitation of the hydrogen that can be produced in Berlevåg from wind-generated hydrogen.
The plans were presented in Norway’s leading engineering magazine Teknisk Ukeblad (article in Norwegian), and an ammonia production plant with a capacity of 110,000 tons a year could be ready by 2025. This would imply a hydrogen production capacity of about 50 tons a day, or 50 times the Haeolus project – about 125 MW of electrolysers!
Energy supply to the remote Svalbard islands, currently the last holdout of coal power in Norway, is one of the first application: but not far behind is the possibility of using ammonia as a green fuel for ships, and the ZEEDS group is involved.
